We offer Practicum/Internship Opportunities

We provide practicum/internship opportunities for individuals in the clinical portion of their LPCC degree. As part of our internship experience, we offer close mentorship and supervision for student-therapists as they gain the skills and confidence to work with individuals, families, and couples across the lifespan with various mental health concerns.

Interns at Sakura Therapy Services are an essential part of the continued work and development of the mental health field. It is important that pre-licensed clinicians develop a strong foundation built around cultural competency, self of the therapist, ethical and legal understanding as well as tools to build long-lasting successful relationships with their peers and their clients.

As an intern at Sakura, you will get to experience all the “behind the scenes” work of running a practice as well as hands-on experience working with a wide variety of mental health difficulties and diverse communities. It is my belief that interns should experience a “little bit of everything” while they are growing and developing who they are as a clinician.

  • Because our own individual histories and experiences impact the work we do as therapists, interns will have time to reflect on issues that come up for them while working with clients and potentially other clinicians. Sakura Therapy Services believes in supporting interns in working through these issues, believing that our own processes are not separate from how we provide therapy. Additionally, Sakura Therapy Services believes that an open-door, judgment-free policy is critical during this time of development.

Internship Requirements

• Required to be enrolled in a Master's level clinical counseling program that leads to LPCC license
• Must be earning academic credit for an internship placement
• Must be able to meet the day/hour requirements of the internship (this is determined based on the school requirements. We do our best to set recommended hours/schedules each week to pace the interns training while still ensuring they will meet their school requirements)
• Applicants should be flexible, resourceful, and demonstrate knowledge of cultural diversity and the role of culture in the therapeutic process

• Copy of the document from your school that lists internship expectations - both of the student and supervisor/placement
• 2-3 letters of recommendation

Once receiving the internship information, it will be processed. If Sakura Therapy Services feels you could be a good fit, then you will be contacted for an interview.

Internship Commitment

• 1-2 hours of individual supervision per week
• Documentation Training
• Non-clinical hours
• In-office and tele-health based opportunities
• Interns must coordinate with their site supervisor's schedule
• Expected minimum of 15-20 hours per week for combined administrative and client contact work. Based on most internship programs roughly 12 client contact hours a week are needed to successfully meet all hours expectations.
• Due to the nature of the clients that Sakura Therapy Services typically sees, we ask for a year-long commitment.
• You will be working with diverse and marginalized populations. You are expected to seek training as needed to develop your overall competencies in this area. You are expected to challenge your own internal biases. There will be no tolerance for any kind of discrimination.

All internship placement offers are contingent upon successful completion of reference checks and background checks, including those outlined in the Minnesota Sexual Exploitation Act.

Applicants who do not successfully pass background checks or comply with Minnesota and HIPAA data privacy requirements will be dismissed from the placement immediately.
